Coastal Virginia bridal boudoir photographers | Bridal boudoir photographers in Virginia

Last year was such a huge one for us. We met some amazing people, tackled some tough challenges, and grew closer together through all of it.

When we think about 2013, this shoot is one of the milestones that stands out.

When Patricia Hoffman, the editor of the German fine art wedding book Hochzeitswahn, contacted us and asked us to shoot this project, we were honored but a little overwhelmed.

We knew to get the right look we’d have to leave our digital cameras behind and shoot exclusively on film.

The concept for our shoot was a bride getting ready for her big day with a bridal boudoir session mixed in.

We have nothing against boudoir but wanted to make sure it fit our “style.” We wanted to keep it elegant & timeless.

With the help of an absolutely amazing team, we were able to do just that.  We can’t say thank you enough to the selfless people that helped make our vision a reality. Their credits are listed at the end of this blog.

It’s a testament to the beautiful power of film, to our lovely model, and our hair and makeup team that we can say these required no retouching.

Thank you again to Patricia Hoffman for inviting us to take part.

We’re so happy to be able to finally share, having photographed this back in August 2013. You can purchase Hochzeitswahn here.

It’s been a slower month for our photography, but it’s important to take the time to get out and shoot.

Now’s the perfect time to try new things – like new film stocks.

I had the pleasure of capturing some portraits on Fuji Reala 100 with my Contax 645 the other day in Yorktown with Rachel. Overexposed 1-2 stops.

<3 enjoy,

Mike

Williamsburg Virginia engagement photographers Michael and Carina photography photograph Cody and Marissa’s engagement on location in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Cody and Marissa are still a year or two out from planning their wedding.

That didn’t stop Cody from wanting to surprise his new fiancee with one of the sweetest gifts for Valentine’s Day.

Their engagement session.

Cody had already contacted Williamsburg Regional Library and received permission to shoot there before he reached out to us with the idea.

The Williamsburg Library is Marissa’s favorite. She’s currently studying literature and has an intense love of books.

The rules were: to be quiet (of course, it’s a library!) and don’t use flash.

Originally we intended to shoot inside for just 10 or 15 minutes, but the weather had other plans.

Pouring rain kept us inside for most of the shoot, but we still ventured outside in the rain for a shot on the Crim Dell Bridge.

Cody and Marissa, thank you for giving us the chance to shoot this fun, unique and romantic engagement session!

It’s important to take the time to make new friends – and not only on social media. We’re thankful we’ve had that opportunity with these two lovely people.

Nikki Santerre is a wonderful Richmond based photographer with whom we’d been referring weddings back and forth with since around September 2013.

We’re shooting her best friend Emily’s wedding this coming October in Roanoke. Here are a few film scans from our double date with her husband, Matt, on one of the many snowy days so far this year at New Kent Winery.

We’re excited to share some engagement session tips and tricks from our new “Wedding Guide,” coming soon to all of our lovely couples!!
Watch for it in the mail. Also, even if you’re not one of our brides, we hope this might help you plan your engagement session!

Your engagement session is your first step in your wedding photography experience with us.
Your engagement photos give you a chance to be as creative as you want. If you want to haul a table, chairs, flowers and wine out into a field for a lovely styled session – you can. If you want to build a pillow fort in your living room and have us photograph the two of you sipping hot cocoa, you can. Or if you simply want to go out to a lovely area that means a lot to you for a simple portrait session celebrating your commitment to each other, you can.

What we love about engagement sessions is you can make it all about you. It’s a great way for you to just be you without any added stress. Engagement sessions are like double dates- we just bring our cameras. We keep things easy-going and natural so you never feel uncomfortable on camera. We like to guide you with natural actions rather than static posing. Everything goes at your own pace. You can make it as creative or as natural as you like!

E-sessions are a great opportunity for you to get to know what to expect on your wedding day! We like to start planning them as soon as you book us. Oh, and did we mention? We love engagement sessions so much that we offer them as gifts with every wedding!

Kelsey and Michael, whose wedding date is quickly approaching in April (eeek!!), set aside a BEAUTIFUL evening in Smithfield for their engagement session. Their engagement session was very special. They wanted to celebrate their two families coming together, so we did that by including their children in their engagement photos! One of the best family sessions AND one of the best engagements ever!:)

Braden and Melanie’s session was rained out; luckily we stepped inside to a little cupcake shop in Richmond (Carytown Cupcakes) and their e-session took on a whole new theme!

Keith and Emily – wow. What a fun engagement session theirs was! We photographed in a botanical garden near Emily’s childhood home, on the mountain where Keith proposed, and then finished up in downtown Roanoke. They poured themselves into their engagement session and sported different outfits in several different locations for an overall gorgeous series of photos.

Stephanie and Jonathan’s inspirational engagement brought New York City style to Stephanie’s backyard in Gloucester. Jonathan, a NYC bartender, sported a dashing bow-tie and Stephanie set up a gorgeous backyard picnic where they celebrated their love with cheese, wine, and Sinatra.

Our most recent engagement session:

Proof that for an amazing engagement session, you don’t need tons of off camera lighting, or even a jaw-dropping location. Cody surprised his fiancee & literature student Marissa with this library engagement session in Williamsburg. More coming soon to the blog!

Additional Tips

When it comes to locations, as you can see above, possibilities are virtually endless. We’re open to your ideas. If there’s a location that’s important to you, it might be a perfect location for an engagement shoot. If you’re at a loss for ideas, feel free to reach out to us. We have plenty of locations we love to shoot at and can make each session unique.

Your engagement photos should represent you! Not only will they be yours forever, but they are great for wedding invites and save the dates. You shouldn’t dress like someone you’re not, but it’s good to put a bit of thought into what you wear!

You should feel comfortable and confident for your e-session! We like to recommend 2-3 outfits with a good variety of semi-casual – to- formal wear.

In colder months, there’s no need to pretend you’re in summer and turn your e-session into a freeze-fest! Wear something cozy and cuddly, When it gets warmer, it’s great to wear something loose and flowing, with movement. When you’re thinking more formal, just bring something you’d wear on a date!

Jeans and khakis almost always work well on camera.
• Pastel tones work extremely well with our style instead of bright, neon colors.
• Plain black and white can tend to show a lot of dirt.
• Patterns aren’t bad, but it’s best to avoid distracting logos.
• It’s okay to have outfits complement each other, but avoid explicitly matching outfits!
• Layers are great! A light scarf, a vest, a jacket all add an extra element to your images.
• Think about shoes to compliment your outfit!
• Personal details & props are great additions to your e-session. Cameras, musical instruments – whatever is important to you. It helps make your engagement ession stand out even more in representing your story.

One final tip for her: your e-session is a perfect opportunity to have your trial bridal makeup and hair done with your makeup artist and stylist. It gives you a chance to see how your makeup will look on your wedding day and it also lends an extra confidence boost!

Sometimes we photographers, like anybody else who have professional goals, get so caught up in redesigning websites, posting blogs, getting more jobs, etc., that we forget it’s important to get out… enjoy the supposedly “mundane,” beautiful moments of life.
We got these Kodak Portra 400 film scans in yesterday from Indie Film Lab from a day we spent with our little chihuahua in Sandy Bottom Park.
I also got the news yesterday that someone I was very close to in college passed away.
He was an extremely talented writer, a poet, and someone who had dreams that were outmatched only by his talent.
“I write about my dreams but I live life through your photographs,” he told me.
I’ll share these for you today then, John, to let you know we’re thinking of you.
No moment is mundane; every moment is beautiful.

Munich Wedding Photographers

Today we thought we’d share one of the last weddings we photographed in a small town just outside of Munich, Germany, all the way back in early 2012…
Sometimes we miss how the average, small town German church just happened to have the 500 year old interior that could have been taken straight out of a fairytale wedding.
Silvia and Armin were an awesome couple to work with. We approached their wedding with much more emphasis on photojournalism than the mix of fine art portraiture and photojournalism that we try to bring to every wedding now.

There’s a bit of a backstory to this wedding too.

Carina and I knew we wanted to start taking wedding photography seriously, and to do that, we’d need to invest in some professional equipment.

We had also been saving some money on the side for a trip to India as trips were so inexpensive from Germany.

With the money we’d put aside for India, we decided to purchase some equipment – a 5D Mark II and a 70-200 II lens, as well as some lighting equipment, from Andrew Gasser, a seller on Amazon.

That’s a lot of money – especially as the Mark IIs were much more expensive then. We’ll let you do the math.

Here’s a tip which we should have known, but didn’t.

If any Amazon seller ever contacts you via email and asks for a direct transfer, don’t do it.

We did.

Our lenses never came and we lost all of our money. Thousands and thousands of dollars just… gone.

I think I spent an entire day in a fetal position when I realized what had happened. Carina and I were so discouraged.

No refund from Amazon as the money was transferred off of their site – no help from the police as “anything under 10,000 euros isn’t worth investigating when it comes to internet fraud.”

This all happened right before we were about to shoot this wedding.

We felt pretty down. I mean, really down.

We had equipment to shoot this wedding that was coming up, but still… we doubted if we should even continue with photography after that. It just hit us really hard.

I (Mike) was still teaching at the time, and someone told my mentor, the daughter of one of my students, what had happened.

She showed up at class a week before the wedding she knew we were about to shoot. She brought a bagful of her own equipment and pushed it into my hands.

“I believe in you two. You can do this. You can come back from this.”

It’s amazing the effect little moments like that can have on our lives.

Marion Hogl inspired us to keep doing what we do today.

If you’re out there and you are doubting yourself, don’t think that we haven’t all been there at some point.

We’ll doubtless all be there again.

But for what’s worth… you can do this.;) Your greatest moment is rising when you fall… heard that somewhere once from a certain friend.

We photographed the wedding and it was the last wedding we photographed before we realized- yes, we love what we do and yes, we’re going to do it full time.

Without those words of encouragement, I sometimes wonder if we would have pursued photography full time in America.

To start off their reception, Silvia and Armin sawed a log in two – a Bavarian country tradition.
It’s good to go back and see where we started and how far we’ve come.

And by the way – a big discount to anyone who wants to book us to shoot a wedding in that church again!

xoxo Michael & Carina
