Virginia Beach Wedding Photographers | Eric + Ashli | Michael and Carina Photography

We arrived early on the day of the wedding at two separate locations in Sandbridge on Virginia’s Atlantic coast.
The “groom’s house,” and the “bride’s house,” which also happened to be the reception venue.
The groom was nowhere to be seen at his location- he was busy delivering a special present to his soon-to-be bride: a silver jewelry box, engraved with her name.
The bride and her girls  finished up last minute DIY projects before the bride’s sisters, aunts, cousins and mom surrounded the bride to help prepare her for the big day.
At the groom’s house, there was a lot of joking about what the best man’s speech “could have been,” mixed with moments of quiet and excited anticipation.

Eric and Ashley. The day they’d been looking forward to since college had arrived.

The ceremony took place at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Virginia Beach..
After exchanging nuptials, we could hardly wait to get back to the beach before the rain started…
It looked like we might make it…
Then a downpour hit. It was so bad the streets completely flooded.
For a moment it seemed as if we might have to reschedule Ashli’s dream portrait session on the beach…
But someone up there heard our prayer…;)
And the rain went on for just a few minutes, and picked up again only when we left for the evening!

We had what turned out to be a great mix of sun and dramatic skies as a backdrop for our beautiful, and noticeably relieved, couple.

Eric and Ashley, as you begin your life together, we send you all the best wishes and thank you for the honor of joining you on your special day!
Safe travels on your honeymoon to Hawaii!

Ashley’s reception featured dozens of DIY projects which she labored on for weeks with the help of her mother.
The cake and cupcake were provided by The Lady of Cake.
Film scans coming soon.
We were assisted by Anthony L. for this wedding! Thanks for helping out, Anthony!

Client Packaging | Photography Branding | Virginia | Williamsburg | Wedding Photographers | Michael and Carina Photography

We are SUPER excited to offer our 2013 couples something new – freshly designed client boxes! It was really important to Michael and I to “pull it all together” branding-wise.

After having our new logo designed a few months ago, we wanted to go ahead and looked for some place to outsource our client packaging. Putting them together ourselves was just way too time consuming. And we’re not exactly craft-masterminds. That said, we had a certain idea that echoed exactly how we see our business: elegant, simple, and classic. White & gold.

We decided to leave the design process to a professional designer who knew just want we had in mind. She is so creative and just knew what we had in mind.

So we received two massive boxes for our 2013 couples yesterday. We feel so awesome:)We are so excited to send these out to our beautiful brides and grooms in just a little while!

Thanks so much for working with us, Jaime. You really helped us make our client boxes “michaelandcarina-ish” and we love it!

Williamsburg Wedding and Engagement Photographers | Lauren + Jason | Michael and Carina Photography

Lauren and Jason met at the College of William and Mary where they studied to become lawyers.
They fell in love and got married three years ago.
They will be graduating this weekend.

Together.

No wonder they couldn’t stop smiling during our session!

We get excited when we see couples so head over heels in love.
And their journey together, as two lovely married lawyers, is about to get even more exciting as they have a big move and big plans ahead of them.
We are so happy you chose us to capture your love, Lauren and Jason.

PS: When one of you decides to run for President, give us a call to be your photographers;)

Thank you SO much to Anthony Le for assisting us! You were a great help!

To show her just how beautiful she looks first thing in the morning in one of my old shirts…
There was no getting out of it…:)
My best friend also happens to be the prettiest girl in town…
My favorite model…
My best friend…
My wife…

Williamsburg Portrait Photography + Mentoring Session | Contax 645 Film | Michael and Carina Photography

A few weeks ago, we got to hang out with Sarah Nice! She gave us some tips on on shooting with her super-fast 7D, and we gave her some tips on growing her business, working with couples, & photography in general.

You can read more about it here.

She’s got a good heart, and one that’s tied to all things country.

She’s pretty handy with a 7D and a 100mm L lens.

She’s got a pretty open & upfront blog over at Coffee Rings and Southern Things… go check it out!

Photos were shot on film and developed at Indie Film Lab.

Personal | Film Practice | Justin & Sarah | Michael and Carina Photography

So, you know what’s awesome?
Hanging out with other photographers. You might have read about it here, here, or here, and even here, but we love hanging out with other photographers and supporting each other.

It’s always fun, and it’s always a learning experience.

Justin is not only a fantastic photographer, but he’s become a friend as well.
The type of friend you text at 5:30 in the morning to wake up so you can both spend more time being productive.
Yea, that happened twice… we’ll get back on that ASAP…;)
Not so awesome?
Get to a film practice session and you set your camera to Aperture Priority to meter (this is an automatic mode where the camera gives you an idea of what your settings should be at), but then you forget to change it back to manual and the camera meters incorrectly.
Just goes to show you how careful you have to be with film… so yea, right about the time I wanted to snap a few shots of Justin and his gorgeous wife Sarah, I forgot to change my camera back to manual. The camera automatically set the shutter speed for the shots, and made them a little too dark. Just a tip for photographers out there: auto = baaaad! Don’t trust your camera! Trust you! lol. Tip for me = remember to take it off of aperture priority mode!

But still, the folks at Indie Film Lab did some nice pushing and pulling and whatnot with the film, and the results are contrastier than they would normally be, and a bit grainier too, but don’t do anything to cover up how sweet this couple is.

Thanks for the shots of me, Justin!:D
Looking forward to hanging out with you again soon!

Personal | One of the Best Birthday Presents | Michael and Carina Photography

I had my 23rd birthday last week… woo hoo! Am another year older!:)
This past year has been one of the most eventful in my life!
I really dedicated myself to photography..
Photographed a lot of weddings…
Went to Rome with my husband and my brother..
Got my greencard..
I moved to America for the second time..
We bought our first car (we covered this before, but in Munich we didn’t need one)…
And just finished my first semester in college with a 4.0 GPA!
I also finally got the college to recognize all of the hard work I did on my degree in Germany, effectively saving me almost two years of college… I can’t describe what a birthday present that was!
This year was the first year where I could say I had a doggie! Something I’d always wanted..

All of this is really enough, but in addition to some wonderful presents from my hubby, a package came in the mail from my grandparents in Germany.
It had chocolates, as usual… but it had something even better than chocolate, or just about any other birthday present this year..
Two albums… two family photo albums..
It starts with a photo of them as teenage sweethearts, with a foreward: “None of this would have happened if we hadn’t fallen in love in 1959…”
And ends with a photo of Michael and I as teenage sweethearts, and the note: “Maybe this is the first picture of the next story?”

Being thousands of miles away from your family can be difficult..
But this made me feel at home..
Family is important no matter where you are and whether you have photos or not, but photos can really help close the gap..
They knew how much these photos would mean to me, but I don’t even think I knew.. they are so special..
And it also really drove home how special it is, what we do.. and gives me an even greater incentive do it, and to do it better and better..

My mom, and dad, and brother are all so important to me..
And though my mom and dad aren’t together anymore, I love them and miss them both.
Looking through the photos, I’m reminded of the good times, and am happy we had them..
<3
Danke, Oma & Opa. Ich hab euch lieb.

Your Photographers | Personal Note | Behind the Scenes + Personal Thoughts | Michael and Carina Photography

This past week we’ve had yet a few more things to fix with our car..

And in case you haven’t experienced it yet – cars are expensive. No really, they are seriously expensive. Oh, you knew?

See, we really didn’t. We’d gotten used to getting around by train in Europe for a small monthly fee of about $75.

We loved to complain just when the trains were 10 minutes late.

So, buying a car and having to learn about problems with the “spark plugs,” “catalytic converters,” “engine mounts,” “transmissions”… it’s taken some getting used to.

“Mr. Bethea, the problem is the doohickeymissionbelt is warping around the plasma transfusion coil, causing excess fuel to leak into the warp drive hyperspace relativity mechanism. Looks like you’ll be needing a new flux capacitor. We can fix it, but it’ll be another $900.”

(I really didn’t have a dad around to teach me about cars, so most of my mechanical knowledge comes from science fiction).

And as I sat in the car shop, so tempted to complain about just how much it sucked having to sink another chunk of money into the car, after having done so just a few weeks ago…

I thought…

“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.” James 1:2

You know? I know so many people who drive their cars down the road in honest fear of not knowing whether it will keep going  or just break down on them in the next mile or two.

That’s how it was for me (Mike), growing up with a single mom who worked three jobs and who didn’t make enough to take care of the bills, car repairs, and groceries all at once. She had to choose between the three. Usually, car repairs came last… let’s say I’m an expert at guiding a car off the road after the engine shut off.

How selfish is it of me to be ungrateful that we have issues with the car which we are completely able to take care of?

And we took care of them using our only source of income – a job that we love to do and which others dream of doing?

I wake up in the morning, I go to work, sure. But my work is something I love to do. I’m a photographer.

“Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:4

We have two friends who are right now working several jobs to keep her photography dream alive. They’re both the most creative, enthusiastic, happy-go-lucky people to be around and we are blessed to know them.

Another friend was just hit by the sequester. Lost his dream job working for the space program, educating the public and engaging schools about the future of nation’s space program.

Lost his apartment, faced with a move, we asked him, “What will you do now?” “I think I’ll go try and get involved in a community garden. Do something to give back to the community and get involved where people need help most.”

Talk about putting perspective on things?

We are so blessed, that when we look at our lives in proper perspective… I really felt ashamed for just how petty it was, in our situation, to be so upset by car repairs.

It’s still not nice to have deal with these issues, but I am so thankful that we can deal with these issues. And we wouldn’t be able to if it weren’t for the clients, fans, friends and vendors who help make our business successful. So thank you guys.

Moving on. Next week, barring bad weather, should be really exciting. But you guys won’t get to see what I’m talking about til later this year..

But we get to hang out with some of the coolest vendors around! I’ll say that!

We had lunch with a very good friend of ours the other day.

We were talking about people in the wedding industry..

He said, “You guys always talk about the vendors you work with with such respect. It’s as if you put everyone up on a pedastal.”

I don’t know about that, but we certainly love the people that have helped us along the way of our journey.

I can’t talk enough about them honestly, because we owe them so much <3

We got off a plane, we approached a few people and said, “If you give us a chance, we’d love to help you grow your business, and you’ll help ours as well.”

A few people said no. A few people said yes.

It’s so important to build each other up.

Without that kind of support network, you can still succeed, but it’s all the more tougher.

So thank you to all of our friends and vendors for putting up with us!

We love you and appreciate you!

I know we’ve said it before, but on the eve of something really cool and exciting next week, we’d thought we’d say it again!

We hope we can return the same support and love that you’ve shown us! You know who you are;)
