People ask us this question often: what camera should I buy if I want to really learn photography? Which DSLR should I buy if I am just starting out, 7D or a Nikon d600?

Our answer-

Buy a cheap body from Nikon or Canon (whichever one feels best in your hand), BODY ONLY WITHOUT A LENS. A new body, sometimes two, come out every year. The Rebel I bought in 2010 for $1000 is worth $400 now. They are all capable of good photos,

Buy a 50mm f1.8 lens for it (roughly $100). It’s worth $100 now, and it’ll most likely be worth close to $100 when you sell it. That’s just it. When it comes to photography equipment, it’s all about the glass. The 50mm focal length is a classic lens for photographers, also known as the “nifty fifty” and even the “fantastic plastic,” (the latter because of the 1.8′s plastic build quality but excellent image quality.

The above photo was taken on a Canon 550D w/ 50mm 1.8 lens in Munich, Germany during a portrait session with a dancer in 2011.

Once you have that setup, you’re good to go. Shoot away. Remember, your first 10,000 shots are your worst!:)
