Williamsburg Virginia engagement photographers Michael and Carina photography photograph Cody and Marissa’s engagement on location in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Cody and Marissa are still a year or two out from planning their wedding.

That didn’t stop Cody from wanting to surprise his new fiancee with one of the sweetest gifts for Valentine’s Day.

Their engagement session.

Cody had already contacted Williamsburg Regional Library and received permission to shoot there before he reached out to us with the idea.

The Williamsburg Library is Marissa’s favorite. She’s currently studying literature and has an intense love of books.

The rules were: to be quiet (of course, it’s a library!) and don’t use flash.

Originally we intended to shoot inside for just 10 or 15 minutes, but the weather had other plans.

Pouring rain kept us inside for most of the shoot, but we still ventured outside in the rain for a shot on the Crim Dell Bridge.

Cody and Marissa, thank you for giving us the chance to shoot this fun, unique and romantic engagement session!

Virginia Beach Wedding Photographers Michael and Carina Photography photograph bridals in Virginia Beach.

It was a cold day in winter.

We had a dress from Gossamer, a beautiful bouquet we purchased from Palette of Petals, and our friend Annika was gorgeously styled by Theresa Little Makeup Artistry.

The sun was almost gone at The Lynnhaven House in Virginia Beach when we started shooting with just a few rolls of film.

It was a lovely evening. Annika’s bridal session was also just featured by one of our favorite blogs, Wedding Sparrow!

Our film scans are below. Shot entirely on Fuji400h

Williamsburg engagement photography

We photographed Sarah and Abdullah’s engagement session in one of our all-time favorite places, Colonial Williamsburg. Although there are few flowers blooming in February, everything was just perfect.
The two of them had all the fun and love you need to make beautiful photos.

Sarah and Abdullah have been a inseparable for a long time. We loved how they just acted naturally; like old friends.
They will finally get married this fall!!!

When a couple tells us that their photographs are one of the most important parts of their wedding day, we just know it’s going to be epic. We are so excited about their intimate wedding near Washington D.C. and already know that Abdullah is going to have a hard time not crying when he sees his beautiful bride for the first time at their first look!<3

We’re excited to share some engagement session tips and tricks from our new “Wedding Guide,” coming soon to all of our lovely couples!!
Watch for it in the mail. Also, even if you’re not one of our brides, we hope this might help you plan your engagement session!

Your engagement session is your first step in your wedding photography experience with us.
Your engagement photos give you a chance to be as creative as you want. If you want to haul a table, chairs, flowers and wine out into a field for a lovely styled session – you can. If you want to build a pillow fort in your living room and have us photograph the two of you sipping hot cocoa, you can. Or if you simply want to go out to a lovely area that means a lot to you for a simple portrait session celebrating your commitment to each other, you can.

What we love about engagement sessions is you can make it all about you. It’s a great way for you to just be you without any added stress. Engagement sessions are like double dates- we just bring our cameras. We keep things easy-going and natural so you never feel uncomfortable on camera. We like to guide you with natural actions rather than static posing. Everything goes at your own pace. You can make it as creative or as natural as you like!

E-sessions are a great opportunity for you to get to know what to expect on your wedding day! We like to start planning them as soon as you book us. Oh, and did we mention? We love engagement sessions so much that we offer them as gifts with every wedding!

Asya and Brandon wanted a cool, wintry, chic feel for their December engagement session Williamsburg.

Kelsey and Michael, whose wedding date is quickly approaching in April (eeek!!), set aside a BEAUTIFUL evening in Smithfield for their engagement session. Their engagement session was very special. They wanted to celebrate their two families coming together, so we did that by including their children in their engagement photos! One of the best family sessions AND one of the best engagements ever!:)

Braden and Melanie’s session was rained out; luckily we stepped inside to a little cupcake shop in Richmond (Carytown Cupcakes) and their e-session took on a whole new theme!

Keith and Emily – wow. What a fun engagement session theirs was! We photographed in a botanical garden near Emily’s childhood home, on the mountain where Keith proposed, and then finished up in downtown Roanoke. They poured themselves into their engagement session and sported different outfits in several different locations for an overall gorgeous series of photos.

Stephanie and Jonathan’s inspirational engagement brought New York City style to Stephanie’s backyard in Gloucester. Jonathan, a NYC bartender, sported a dashing bow-tie and Stephanie set up a gorgeous backyard picnic where they celebrated their love with cheese, wine, and Sinatra.

Our most recent engagement session:

Proof that for an amazing engagement session, you don’t need tons of off camera lighting, or even a jaw-dropping location. Cody surprised his fiancee & literature student Marissa with this library engagement session in Williamsburg. More coming soon to the blog!

Additional Tips

When it comes to locations, as you can see above, possibilities are virtually endless. We’re open to your ideas. If there’s a location that’s important to you, it might be a perfect location for an engagement shoot. If you’re at a loss for ideas, feel free to reach out to us. We have plenty of locations we love to shoot at and can make each session unique.

Your engagement photos should represent you! Not only will they be yours forever, but they are great for wedding invites and save the dates. You shouldn’t dress like someone you’re not, but it’s good to put a bit of thought into what you wear!

You should feel comfortable and confident for your e-session! We like to recommend 2-3 outfits with a good variety of semi-casual – to- formal wear.

In colder months, there’s no need to pretend you’re in summer and turn your e-session into a freeze-fest! Wear something cozy and cuddly, When it gets warmer, it’s great to wear something loose and flowing, with movement. When you’re thinking more formal, just bring something you’d wear on a date!

Jeans and khakis almost always work well on camera.
• Pastel tones work extremely well with our style instead of bright, neon colors.
• Plain black and white can tend to show a lot of dirt.
• Patterns aren’t bad, but it’s best to avoid distracting logos.
• It’s okay to have outfits complement each other, but avoid explicitly matching outfits!
• Layers are great! A light scarf, a vest, a jacket all add an extra element to your images.
• Think about shoes to compliment your outfit!
• Personal details & props are great additions to your e-session. Cameras, musical instruments – whatever is important to you. It helps make your engagement ession stand out even more in representing your story.

One final tip for her: your e-session is a perfect opportunity to have your trial bridal makeup and hair done with your makeup artist and stylist. It gives you a chance to see how your makeup will look on your wedding day and it also lends an extra confidence boost!

PASS Mobile App For Clients from Showit on Vimeo.

Ya’ll know that we’re so-called shoot and share photographers. We love including all the images and reproduction rights when giving our clients the images. It’s more of an all-inclusive experience and just better suits the way we like to do business.
That’s because we love for our couples to share their photos with all of their friends and family. That makes everybody excited ; it’s kind of like word of mouth. We’re big fans of that.
The past year or so PASS has made “shooting and sharing” super easy, super fun and super elegant for us. PASS is a free image sharing software that displays and stores the images. This brilliant software was created by photographers just like us, so it makes sense that we would love it!

You can share images for up to 30 days at no cost. You can upgrade galleries for a low yearly fee and images are guaranteed to be saved in the cloud for up to 10 years! What a huge security blanket for us and our clients!
No need to worry about getting a scratch in that CD or losing that USB stick. And even your family and friends that maybe could not make it to the wedding can be part of it by browsing all the photographs. You and your loved ones can even order (really affordable) prints directly to your doorstep through it.
Plus it just looks sexy!

NOW there is also a PASS app for your smartphone! We downloaded it yesterday and are loving it so far!
It has all the perks the online gallery has (storing, displaying, sharing, print ordering), but it’s on your phone. So it’s portable. You can show your friends your favorite wedding images at dinner. Or if you’re traveling and you just want to go back to those beautiful moments, you can.

As a photographer, PASS might not be for everyone, but it has definitely done wonders for our business. Talk about simplifying your life!! You can use the app to show clients examples of your work. We intend to do so for sure! It is very sleek and simple.

The images load quickly and are beautifully crisp and accurate in color. It looks just as beautiful as on the computer screen. We are in love and highly recommend getting the new app!

Virginia Film Photographers | Hampton Roads Engagement Photographers | Yorktown Photographers

Last week when snow blanketed Hampton Roads, and Yorktown turned into a scene from a Christmas postcard, (despite it being the end of January), there was one thought on our minds: how soon can we get out of our driveway to go make some beautiful images?
Fortunately, we didn’t have to wait long. Sarah and David were just as enthusiastic about the opportunity to get out and shoot, and our lovely apartment maintenence crews had our driveway cleared by 10am.
There was one main rule- we wanted to see how a session in the snow would look on film, so we photographed almost exclusively with our Contax 645s, using Fuji400h & Kodak Portra 400 film. We were also so thankful to have Justin Ferry tag along and shoot with us despite below-freezing temperatures.

Sarah and David are not engaged; they’ve been together for 8 months.Their love for each other really kept them warm on camera; and when they needed some extra warmth, they cuddled under their blanket together. What you guys don’t see – Carina and I cuddled up in the blanket too-  while we were shooting- to try and keep warm!

Sarah is a devoted blogger; you can read her review of her experience here.
Sarah and David, you guys are too beautiful.
We’re looking forward to following your love story in the coming years!

We recenlty shot a styled shoot at the Hope and Glory Inn with the wonderful Rachel Faulkner as our model bride. It was all film, our favorite. Her boyfriend, who is also an amazing photographer out of Charlottesville, joined us for the shoot. We had a blast and the pictures turned out greeeeeeeeat (will share them with you later).

After the shoot, we had one roll of Kodak Portra 800 left. We decided to make a mini couple session out of it, just for fun. We had never shot with that film outside before so we were a bit nervous about how it would turn out.
Filmbox Lab sent us the film scans a few weeks ago and we are in love.

These two make a gorgeous couple.
We are honored to take their portraits. <3

Maybe Ron said it best: “The greatest relationships are the ones you never expected to be in. Ones that sweep you off your feet and change every view you’ve ever had.”
