Anthony has been amazing this past year. An amazing assistant and an amazing friend.

The past spring we were looking for an assistant to come with us to weddings. Shooting as much film as we have been and carrying around so much gear, we really needed a helping hand.
We needed somebody we could trust and somebody we could have lots of fun with. Anthony was one of the first people to write us. We met and it clicked.

He is one of the most humble and motivated people we know. Plus, he seems to have magical memory powers; seriously, he always remembers where we put our lens caps! I guess you could call this patience-training?:)

Anthony is good at so many things. He is a passionate coach and teacher, he has a fantastic sense of style and he is incredibly talented when it comes to photography.
He has just been soaking all the experience and information up and is about to launch his own photography website! *proud moment*
We are super excited to see where is he going. Because he is going places. Big time.
Yeah, we pretty much love this guy and are happy to call him a friend.

Today is St. Nikolaus Day!!! In Germany (and as far as I know pretty much all across Europe), children anxiously await a visit from St. Nikolaus, who rewards good kids with presents and candies. (Well,…and the bad kids get taken away in a sac by Nikolaus’ evil companion, Krampus. More about that here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krampus)

St. Nikolaus Day was quite a big deal for my family. We all go together to have dinner (fish and potatoes traditionally) and hoped for St. Nikolaus to come and tell us how good we’ve been all year:)After that, we’d all eat way too much chocolate and mandarines. So, Happy St. Nikolaus Tag, guys!!!:)
I guess remembering St. Nikolaus Day today made me feel a bit nostalgic…so I thought I’d share some personal thoughts about Christmas far away from home with you guys…

It is the time to be happy…and for the most part I am. I love the holidays! I love the Christmas carols and snuggling on the sofa with my baby and my other baby (August, our chihuahua). And I love good food. Looking back on the past 1,5 years, I can only be so thankful for how far we have come since moving to Virginia from Germany. We are doing what we love, together. We meet the most amazing people and we get to capture love stories. I am also doing well at college. SO we really have a lot to celebrate!

But sometimes, especially this time of year, I miss my home. And I am sure many of you can identify with this. If you live far away from where you grew up and your family, this feeling of homesickness just catches up with you sometimes.
I was always a big fan of German Christmas – the sweet little Christmas markets, the smell of Christmas punch (Gluehwein), homemade honey bread and roasted almonds seemed to be everywhere. In fact that is one of the things that Michael remembers a lot from visiting me in Germany around Christmas time many years ago…the lovely smell. And all the lights…and music.

Within the past weeks we have been receiving lots of packages from Germany…all filled with the most thoughtful Christmas and pre-Christmas gifts (haha, my favorite!) from my family in Germany. You can smell the homemade Christmas cookies and spiced chocolates even before opening the boxes!:)
We have already set up dates to have a “skype-Christmas” together…that is really neat. But it is not the same.
I love remembering Christmas eve at my parents’ house when I was a kid. My mom would light sparklers on the Christmas tree and ring a bell (as a sign from an “angel”) telling my little brother and I that we were now allowed to come downstairs to see the presents under the tree. The Christmas bells from the main church in Munich, the Frauenkirche (right by the Christmas market in the pictures), were playing on a CD. It was truly magical.

Michael and I haven’t decided yet how we will celebrate Christmas this year. But we sure love cuddling on the sofa with our pup and share some popcorn:)Or my most recent discovery: macaroons! haha
We are so happy to know that we will never spend another Christmas apart. “All I want for Christmas is you” became true for us. We are our own little family now and we can create our own little traditions that maybe one day our future children will hold dear.
This is where we are right now, living the moment, loving life and each other. And it is wonderful to know that my family back home is just a phone call away.

xoxo, Carina

PS: The pictures were all taken in 2009 <3

Last week, we met up with Mackinsey and Kyle at one of the newest Virginia wedding venues.

Fairview Farm is a LOVELY location for a wedding located in Powhatan, Virginia.

We absolutely ADORED the rolling hills and fields, the bales of hay, the “hitching post,” and the antique truck.

The farmhouse is just adorable and can be rented out.

But wow… we fell in LOVE with the inside of the barn. It is absolutely gorgeous!!

It’s decorated with antique chairs and everything has a lovely vintage feel, fitting for the farm which has been owned by the same family since the early 20th century.

There’s a lovely balcony, bathrooms, a kitchen, a fireplace, and a bar in the barn as well.

It’s been converted into the perfect place to hold a “country” wedding.

It’s also great for us as photographers. The way it’s built allows for TONS of natural light to pour in.

We can hardly wait to shoot Kyle & Mackinsey’s wedding at Fairview Farm next year, even though we’ll have to wait until October 2014 to do it!

We’d love to shoot another wedding there though! Be sure to contact us if you’re planning your Fairview Farm wedding!

Below are some shots we took on our digital camera, all with natural light. We shared mainly photos of the interior; more photos of the venue can be seen on their website.

When you think of having a country reception in a barn, you probably don’t imagine it as having tons of natural light.

At least, we didn’t.

We were wrong! And we’re in love!:)

Last but not least, here’s a preview of Kyle and Mackinsey’s engagement session… one of the only shots we took on our digital camera (the rest was on film).

Williamsburg Wedding + Engagement Photographers

We met them where they met… at the College of William and Mary in historic Williamsburg, Virginia.

That’s where they shared their first kiss.

It was around this time of year too… just after a Halloween party.

He kissed her right in front of her dorm room.

That was in 2004.

She’s a teacher now; he works with computers.

Some time has passed since then, but their love has only grown for each other.

Their engagement session was just awesome.

We met at a place we all know so well – the lovely Wren Building – early in the morning.

It was just after sunrise.

We adore clients willing to get out of bed for “the best light.”

We walked around the campus together. It was easy to document their love.

They’re not just engaged lovers; at this point, they’re old friends.

They’re just natural together.

The William and Mary staff was also happy to let us into the Zable Stadium, home of the Tribe, for a few shots!

That was pretty cool – but the real highlight of their session was right in front of Emily’s old dorm room.

We went there too.

And they kissed.

Their wedding will be next April at the Wren Chapel in downtown Williamsburg.  Jason, Emily: we are honored to be your wedding photographers.

We photographed this session mainly on Kodak Portra 400 film.

Richmond Virginia Wedding Photographers

When Amber and Dustin invited us to be their wedding photographers at their Richmond, Virginia wedding, we were excited.

We love Sunday weddings.

And how fitting for these two?! They are both proud to be the children of pastors.

And what a touching ceremony… where two fathers shared in joining their children together!

Their engagement session (above) took place over the summer in Williamsburg.

They are quiet, these two… but don’t let that fool ya. When they look in each other’s eyes, their eyes sparkle and they can’t help but smile.

Dustin’s dad acted as the DJ at their reception, and Amber’s family from across the American Southwest amazed us with their dance moves.

Truly, it was a Sunday to remember. And these two – their love is amazing.

We photographed their wedding on Kodak Portra 400 film; we shot some digital too.
