PASS Mobile App For Clients from Showit on Vimeo.

Ya’ll know that we’re so-called shoot and share photographers. We love including all the images and reproduction rights when giving our clients the images. It’s more of an all-inclusive experience and just better suits the way we like to do business.
That’s because we love for our couples to share their photos with all of their friends and family. That makes everybody excited ; it’s kind of like word of mouth. We’re big fans of that.
The past year or so PASS has made “shooting and sharing” super easy, super fun and super elegant for us. PASS is a free image sharing software that displays and stores the images. This brilliant software was created by photographers just like us, so it makes sense that we would love it!

You can share images for up to 30 days at no cost. You can upgrade galleries for a low yearly fee and images are guaranteed to be saved in the cloud for up to 10 years! What a huge security blanket for us and our clients!
No need to worry about getting a scratch in that CD or losing that USB stick. And even your family and friends that maybe could not make it to the wedding can be part of it by browsing all the photographs. You and your loved ones can even order (really affordable) prints directly to your doorstep through it.
Plus it just looks sexy!

NOW there is also a PASS app for your smartphone! We downloaded it yesterday and are loving it so far!
It has all the perks the online gallery has (storing, displaying, sharing, print ordering), but it’s on your phone. So it’s portable. You can show your friends your favorite wedding images at dinner. Or if you’re traveling and you just want to go back to those beautiful moments, you can.

As a photographer, PASS might not be for everyone, but it has definitely done wonders for our business. Talk about simplifying your life!! You can use the app to show clients examples of your work. We intend to do so for sure! It is very sleek and simple.

The images load quickly and are beautifully crisp and accurate in color. It looks just as beautiful as on the computer screen. We are in love and highly recommend getting the new app!

Munich Wedding Photographers

Today we thought we’d share one of the last weddings we photographed in a small town just outside of Munich, Germany, all the way back in early 2012…
Sometimes we miss how the average, small town German church just happened to have the 500 year old interior that could have been taken straight out of a fairytale wedding.
Silvia and Armin were an awesome couple to work with. We approached their wedding with much more emphasis on photojournalism than the mix of fine art portraiture and photojournalism that we try to bring to every wedding now.

There’s a bit of a backstory to this wedding too.

Carina and I knew we wanted to start taking wedding photography seriously, and to do that, we’d need to invest in some professional equipment.

We had also been saving some money on the side for a trip to India as trips were so inexpensive from Germany.

With the money we’d put aside for India, we decided to purchase some equipment – a 5D Mark II and a 70-200 II lens, as well as some lighting equipment, from Andrew Gasser, a seller on Amazon.

That’s a lot of money – especially as the Mark IIs were much more expensive then. We’ll let you do the math.

Here’s a tip which we should have known, but didn’t.

If any Amazon seller ever contacts you via email and asks for a direct transfer, don’t do it.

We did.

Our lenses never came and we lost all of our money. Thousands and thousands of dollars just… gone.

I think I spent an entire day in a fetal position when I realized what had happened. Carina and I were so discouraged.

No refund from Amazon as the money was transferred off of their site – no help from the police as “anything under 10,000 euros isn’t worth investigating when it comes to internet fraud.”

This all happened right before we were about to shoot this wedding.

We felt pretty down. I mean, really down.

We had equipment to shoot this wedding that was coming up, but still… we doubted if we should even continue with photography after that. It just hit us really hard.

I (Mike) was still teaching at the time, and someone told my mentor, the daughter of one of my students, what had happened.

She showed up at class a week before the wedding she knew we were about to shoot. She brought a bagful of her own equipment and pushed it into my hands.

“I believe in you two. You can do this. You can come back from this.”

It’s amazing the effect little moments like that can have on our lives.

Marion Hogl inspired us to keep doing what we do today.

If you’re out there and you are doubting yourself, don’t think that we haven’t all been there at some point.

We’ll doubtless all be there again.

But for what’s worth… you can do this.;) Your greatest moment is rising when you fall… heard that somewhere once from a certain friend.

We photographed the wedding and it was the last wedding we photographed before we realized- yes, we love what we do and yes, we’re going to do it full time.

Without those words of encouragement, I sometimes wonder if we would have pursued photography full time in America.

To start off their reception, Silvia and Armin sawed a log in two – a Bavarian country tradition.
It’s good to go back and see where we started and how far we’ve come.

And by the way – a big discount to anyone who wants to book us to shoot a wedding in that church again!

xoxo Michael & Carina

Your wedding ring. It’s a symbol of something timeless. Of wholeness, completeness.

You’ll wear it until you pass it on to your descendants.

The wedding ring is something which couples normally budget for in their weddings and usually, (unless it’s inherited), don’t flinch at investing a good deal into it.

It’s something that will last forever and will forever hold the two of you together as it reminds you of your bond with your spouse.

There’s one other thing that you could apply that description to with your wedding… you can guess what it is.:)

We don’t mean to step on anybody’s toes or upset anybody – this is just us explaining why we price our collections.

We get many wedding inquiries – and we get excited about each and every one. The excitement of newly engaged couples is so special!

Hearing about the venue and the love story behind it all makes us smile when we open up the email.

When we get an inquiry from a couple that is genuinely excited to meet us, we get excited too. Knowing you are entrusted with capturing the most important day of their lives is…incredible.

When we receive inquiries, the first thing we like to do is invite you out for coffee. It’s a trade – we buy you coffee, you tell us your love story.

We love getting to know you and making sure we’re a right fit.

virginia_wedding_photographers_michael_and_carina_photography_3145.jpg

One thing we hear of sometimes, not from “our” couples, of course, is that wedding photography is overpriced.

Your investment with us really is an “investment.” Documenting one of the most important days of your lives is something you invest in not only for yourselves, but for your children… and their children.

Our couples know the value of what they are investing in even though sometimes we work out payment plans, they love the images we create enough to see the value in them.

But for some, wedding photography pricing is just, across the board, too high.

The value of beautiful wedding photos speak for themselves. Their permanence. It’s what we first fell in love with about photography. It’s what still amazes us about photography. Our photos of our travels in Egypt years ago still take us back, even on a cold day like today, to a crowded Egyptian bazaar, with sand in our mouths and eyes, the scent of saffron and other spices mixing with the fumes of the diesel engines of Nile cruise ships in our noses.

virginia_wedding_photographers_michael_and_carina_photography_3149.jpg

2010

Memory is transient; photos remain.

That’s priceless.

Your investment includes a lot that most people don’t automatically think of, as well.

When you invest with us, you’re investing in:

  • - hours of work on the wedding day, the day of your engagement session
  • - oh, we forgot to mention… the engagement session which we include in our wedding collections
  • - hours of work planning, emailing, location scouting, communicating, editing, retouching, saving, delivering behind the scenes
  • - $$,$$$.$$+++ worth of professional photography equipment (we won’t go too much into detail but the lens we use just for lovely ringshots like the one above costs almost $1,000.00).
  • - professional insurance for said camera equipment
  • - professional, up-to-date editing software (and the training & experience of using it)
  • - liability insurance
  • - legal fees for contracts, etc.
  • - Federal, state, county taxes
  • - fees for an accountant to help us with taxes
  • - $$$.$$+ worth of film for each engagement session and wedding
  • - $$$$.$$ ++ invested in training so we can offer the best to our clients
  • - terabytes of harddrives and online hosting to preserve and protect your images if you should lose them
  • - online, instantly downloadable galleries
  • - website fees
  • - a reliable vehicle to make sure we are there on the big day
  • - travel
  • - funds we continually invest in our business to help make it successful

… the list goes on.

We love what we do. There couldn’t be a better career for us. We definitely don’t mind working.

But it is a business. Just because it’s a creative business doesn’t mean that the work put into it is of less value than the effort put into any other line of work. Michael recently had to stop by the dentist… when he got the bill he joked with the dentist, “Maybe you could use my teeth for your portfolio? I have a lot of friends that would love to book you and could get you some great exposure!” lol;)

Aside from the expenses mentioned, we have commitments and responsibilities like anyone else. Photography is how we pay our bills – one day we’d like to start a family, too. In the meantime we’d like to buy groceries.:)

And one thing we cannot do is justify offering arbitrary discounts to clients who like our work, but who don’t like the idea of investing in it.

A friend of ours mentioned once that she estimated she had given away…. given away, as in donated… over $5,000.00 to clients in “discounts” in the space of one year.

Imagine if you felt pressured to do the same to survive?

It’s not fair to us, nor to our clients who already have invested in our work. More importantly, it’s not fair to the family we hope to have someday (whom we are trying to save for now!).

virginia_wedding_photographers_michael_and_carina_photography_3150.jpg

Please understand… this isn’t about any specific person. And we know some people honestly just can’t afford what we offer. It’s tough to get a message from a person excited about our work but who “just can’t afford it.”

If we can’t be there for your wedding, we always try and make ourselves available for a couple session, bridal portrait session, or an engagement session.

At the same time, we’re also not the most expensive photographers out there, and as we value your experience over any kind of sales, we really try to make sure you get the most out of your experience with us.

This is just an explanation as to why our prices are the way they are.

This is also a big, big thank you to all of our clients who value our work. We are so honored to know each and everyone of you. When we had to raise our pricing last year literally so we could continue to survive on photography, we were quite nervous… terrified is perhaps a better word.

virginia_wedding_photographers_michael_and_carina_photography_3147.jpg

A week later, Andrew and Jessica, Kim and Brian, and Cameron and Julia all met with us and booked us for their big day.

(Photographers take note – don’t doubt the value of your work! Your clients are out there and they’ll love your work so you should too!)

We’re humbled and blessed to know all of you – all of our clients – and can’t thank you enough for inviting us to be part of your weddings.

xoxo

Kingsmill wedding photographers

We are too excited to finally share our last wedding of 2013 with you!

We first got to know know them when we did their engagement photos in Yorktown.

Dylan asked Lindsay to marry him at Yorktown Beach, so it made the perfect spot for their e-session!

What we adore about these two William and Mary alumni is how they bring out the best in each other.

In every way, they compliment each other. The chemistry they have on camera is nothing short of divine.

Lindsay is obsessed with Christmas. Seriously, it’s a condition of their marriage that the Christmas season starts right after Halloween.

Their wedding rounded up our Christmas season and took place when all the decorations and lights were still to be seen at Kingsmill Resort.

We took their portraits on the lovely grounds at the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg near the water while family members looked on from a balcony.

Brittany, Kingsmill’s event coordinator, was kind enough to have a van waiting for us to transport us through the cold.

And it was quite chilly, but Dylan was a perfect gentleman to his new bride – which made for even better portraits.

Their reception was a perfect celebration.

Lindsay and Dylan already received their digital files a while ago, but we’ve been waiting to get our film scans in to share this with you! And now we can!

Lindsay and Dylan, thank you for inviting us to take part in your special day!

There are many things ladies obsess over. Among others, chocolate, Ryan Gosling and our hair. Sorry to disappoint you, but this is not about chocolate or about Ryan Gosling.
Lately I have been hooked on the hair tutorials on Kate’s “The Small Things Blog”, which probably half of you already know.;)

Hair cuts, hair color, hair styling, hair accessories. There is no end to it – Michael can attest to my recent obsession. <3

And there is definitely no day that HAS to be a good-hair-day more than a girl’s wedding day.

This is the day she hopes to look her very best. She wants to look like a bride.

How many months do brides spend today stalking Pinterest and going back and forth between their favorite hairstyles?

I was totally there.

Except, there was no Pinterest when I got married, “all the way back in 2011…”

I just knew I wanted curls. Because my hair is completely straight and you always want what you don’t have, right?:)

Even though I am married already, I am still always on the hunt for a new hairstyle to try.

Number one priority: it needs to make you feel absolutely beautiful.

Our brides have amazing style. And I love that they aren’t all going for the same hair-do. Their hair totally work with their personalities and wedding themes.
Whether you are still looking for your perfect bridal hairstyle or your new everyday favorite hairdo – be inspired by our lovely brides. <3

All-up: This is a classic hair-do which is perfect for ballroom and traditional weddings. Lindsay is rockin’ that look! Also love a little sparkle…

virginia_wedding_photographers_michael_and_carina_photography_3001.jpg

All-up for super long hair: Leanne has Rapunzel-hair which works perfectly for these amazing braids, one of our favorite designs from our friend, Alice of Hair by Alice:

virginia_wedding_photographers_michael_and_carina_photography_3011.jpg

Low all-up: Megan’s fall wedding was very romantic. Her hairstyle fit right in. She chose to put a daisy in her hair…which made it magical.

virginia_wedding_photographers_michael_and_carina_photography_3004.jpg

virginia_wedding_photographers_michael_and_carina_photography_3006.jpg

Half-up: Another favorite of brides. Michael always says that if you can’t decide between two, pick both (don’t worry, he’s usually joking when he says this, because it usually has something to do with $$$$ photography gear).

I think this style is a great combination of casual and formal. It’s both romantic and playful. A great way to make this style “you” is to add a litle “oomph” to it. Adding a bridcage, a veil or a braid makes it walk-down-the-aisle-worthy. Morgan, one of our fall brides, showed off her trendy ombre hair with her half-up hair-do. For Miko it was all about simplicity. A few pinned back strands gave her a really soft look. So many options…:)

virginia_wedding_photographers_michael_and_carina_photography_3007.jpg

All-down: Some girls just want to show off their gorgeous hair and let it all down. Loose curls and lots of shine mist will make this look a winner. This look is very romantic and sexy. Rachel is the girl to pull it off!

virginia_wedding_photographers_michael_and_carina_photography_3012.jpg

Sophisticated:  Let me introduce you to Lianne. Everybody gasps when she shakes her head. Alice worked her magic and came up with one of the most sophisticated hairstyles I have ever seen. This incredible braid-within-a-braid will make you speechless.

virginia_wedding_photographers_michael_and_carina_photography_3009.jpg

By the way, the amazing hair stylist -no, artist – who did most of hairdos displayed  is located here in Hampton Roads! Her name is Alice (Hair by Alice) and she is pretty much AAAAAAmazing! (she did Lianne’s, Brooke’s, Leanne’s and Yae-Wen’s - not to mention MY hair!).

Other hairstylists: Spring Wiley (last picture, all down, Rachel), Robbie Miller Master Paul Mitchell Hairstylist (long, curly up-do, Alicia), Drew from Shear Envy Hair Salon (ombre, half-up, Morgan), My Moblie Salon Inc. (short curly half-up, Pilar)

Happy Tuesday, everyone!

We’ve recently completed editing Lindsay and Dylan’s wedding, and we’re eagerly awaiting their film scans to share with you.

We fell in LOVE with their dancing photos, and we thought we’d share a preview from their wedding.

We thought we’d also offer some insight into how we light most of the first dances we shoot.

Here’s a list of the equipment:

Canon 5D Mark II(s)

Canon 600 EXs (multiple)

Canon 35mm 1.4 L lens/ 50mm 1.2 L lens/ 135mm f2 L lens

Lightstand or an assistant

Newlyweds:)

One thing to remember: we like to keep things simple and beautiful. This is how we light a first dance but there are definitely other ways too! This is what we like <3

Also – we love shooting film. Give us some natural light and we could shoot film all day.  Also, Ilford 3200 b+w film has a gorgeous, grainy look to it that captures dances well even in low light conditions.

That said, we like the flexibility of being hybrid shooters and being able to get clean, clear images with digital cameras when it gets dark.

williamsburg virginia wedding photographers

Williamsburg Virginia Wedding Photography at Kingsmill Resort by Michael and Carina Photography

ISO 1250, 135mm L lens at f2.5, 1/160 (remember to keep your shutter speed fast enough when using longer lenses to eliminate camera shake)

We start off by finding the correct exposure for the room, without flash, and then underexposing slightly so by using off camera lighting, we can put a moody spotlight on the couple.

This varies from setting to setting.

Then we take a test shot to find the correct exposure with bounce flash on camera, usually pointed at a nearby light surface such as a white wall.

Shooting with our flashes in manual mode is really important to us. A lot of photographers rely on ETTL mode, but we find we get more consistent results when we set everything manually.

Walls can easily be used like big softboxes if you bounce your flash correctly.

Also, remember to check the “zoom” of your flash. If you’re shooting with your flash set to 24mm but you have a 135mm lens on your camera, it might be why your results are looking wonky.

This also applies to bouncing your flash!

(Do be aware that “bouncing” might not always work, especially if you’re in a  venue with wooden walls and ceilings – bouncing off of these surfaces turns your photos red. Then it’s a good idea to have a trigger handy and to use a small umbrella.)

Next we sync up our on camera flash, the Canon 600 EX, with another off camera 600 EX.

The second flash is important. It’s creates a “rimlight” which defines / highlights the silhouette of the couple and helps bring them out from the background.

Have we mentioned how much we love the Canon 600 EX?

If for no other reason, it uses a radio sync transmission system that works flawlessly. Officially, the master flash can trigger the slave up to “98 feet,” but we’ve tested it across parking lots and gotten great results. No need for pocket wizards or any extra gear.

If you’re into keeping your life and gear list simplified when it comes to off camera flash, the 600EXs are for you!

The off camera 600 EX is either on a stand or being held by an assistant as seen in the position below.

Having an assistant is great because it means that you can move and have the light move with you accordingly.

We try and keep the flash at 2 or 10 o’clock to our 6. You can also try with the light at 12 o clock  and lower to the ground to wrap the light around your subject for a silhouette.

Our off camera flash is normally zoomed in to around 70mm. If you’re trying this technique and finding that the light is overpowering the background or wrapping around the subject too much, you might want to adjust the zoom or use a snoot modifier.

Our off camera flash usually starts off at half the power of our on camera flash, both of which we try and keep turned low for three reasons.

1. Conserve battery life

2. To increase recycle time

3. To be less noticeable

For the photos above, our on camera flash was at 1/32 and our off camera flash was at 1/64.

This doesn’t matter as much for black and white photos, but if the ambient light is really warm, gels can help your flashes match the color of the indoor lights.

That’s about it, except this: we try to really watch for our shots, so as not to cause a distraction.

If the couple has their back to you, it’s a good moment to take a break and hold off.

Choosing your shots carefully means you get more keepers, and it also means you’re less noticeable.

That’s about it! How do you light your receptions? Did this help you? Do you have any more questions?

Let us know in the comments below!

xoxo,

2013 has been an exciting year for us. It was our first year in business as full-time wedding photographers!!! We shot amazing weddings and sessions, met amazing people, got published and defined our brand.
But 2014 will be even better! We have big plans and many goals and we know that hard work, humility and God’s blessings, good things will happen.

So here it is, our 2014 business goals list:

Get published in more places! We mean business when it comes to this one. We work with fabulous people and we want to share their fabulous-ness with the world!:)Print and online. Nationwide and international.
What better way to keep us motivated than anxiously awaiting for the new international wedding inspiration book, “Hochzeitswahn” book, to be released in just a FEW DAYS!!! The book features incredible work of photographers from all over the world. We can still hardly believe that they chose one of our image for the cover. It can be purchased directly from the Hochzeitswahn website and Amazon. EEEEEEEEEEEEEK! And that’s just the beginning!:)

Do more styled shoots. Obviously working with amazing models and vendors is among our favorite things ever; we love being creative, we love beautiful dresses , we love love love it. So why not more of it?:)

Seriously, let’s get creative! We want to think outside of the box, and still make some elegant & beautiful stories come to life.

Branding. This is almost on every photographer’s list of goals. Maybe creatives are just never completely happy with their logo, their website etc. And that might be a good thing. We need to develop to move forward and to stay creative. Branding is so much more than just a logo and that might be the reason why it’s so tricky. Your brand is you. It is what you represent. 2013 has taught us that Michael and Carina Photography is the “and”, it is “us”. Michael and I. Working together as a team. So last year we went ahead and had the wonderful the Girl Tyler make a promo video for us.
We also love a soft, elegant and dreamy look. That is why we have fallen head over heels in love with film photography (old-fashioned, dark-room, amazing)! Tying our love for each other and fine art photography together pretty much makes us as a brand.
The art of it is being consistent. One of the first things we want to tackle this year is welcome packages and client packaging. We also just switched album companies to better streamline our workflow.

Do exciting things. We are going to travel this year – we already have 3 destination weddings booked! Having fun and work are not contradictions! We want to be more adventurous, think more outside the box and be outrageous.:)Also on our list of goals: shoot in Europe. That is a no-brainer for me. I love an miss my home and know of a million places I am just itching to shoot at. A big return visit to Europe is being planned and I can hardly wait!!!

-

Because our personal life and our business go hand in hand, we think it’s important to set ourselves some personal goals as well.

-

Don’t get bogged down by negativity. We really want to stay away from “cliques” in the industry. We want to continue to stay positive and pursue all of our goals in a professional, positive, friendly manner. We want to let three things guide the way we work with others: think with love, speak with kindness, and act selflessly. To do this, and be genuine about it, (with God’s help), we’ll maintain good relationships with other professionals and our clients.

Travel more. I already mentioned this in the business list but it is really important to us on both levels. I grew up travelling and I simply cannot live without it. Going on adventures and experiencing new things, meeting new people broadens your horizons. It changes you. And we love it. 2014 will take us to Florida and the West. ROAD TRIP!!!

Be fit. Another obvious choice. We want to be healthy, happy and fit. Since I am not really a big fan of the gym, I want to go out for walks on a more regular basis. I really wish we had sidewalks here!!! In the spirit of being healthy I also just stuffed our freezer with quinoa, veggies and frozen fruit. OH YEAH!

Keep some space between work and our personal life. This is a tough one and I think we might need some tough love here. Being self-employed does not mean that you have to work 24/7. In 2014 we will work on knowing when to “turn work off”. I hope this means we’ll have a lot more time for friends, for going new places, and popcorn-and-cuddle-time on our sofa with doggie.

So that’s about it for now… we’d love to hear more about your goals! Feel free to share in the comment box below!

xoxo

We love telling love stories through images.

A lot of people just took a big step in their own love stories this month and are getting ready to start a whole new chapter by getting married in 2014 & 2015.

The couples we work with trust us to tell their story because at the center of everything we do is love.

We just spent the past few days planning one wedding with a bride, meeting with another, taking part in a rehearsal and photographed Lindsay and Dylan’s lovely Williamsburg wedding!

After scheduling quite a few appointments today, we are looking forward to spending the first weeks of 2013 meeting with newly engaged couples and hearing new love stories.

We are so excited about what this next year holds, as couples have asked us to be their wedding photographers for several destination weddings (fun!) and of course across VA, from Hampton Roads to Charlottesville and Roanoke (we LOVE Virginia!).

The best part about it is? For all of this, we get to do it together.

Our couple become friends, our engagement sessions become double dates. . . by the time of the wedding, you know if there’s one thing you don’t have to worry about, it’s your photos!

What could be better?

If you are newly engaged and are planning your wedding, or if you know someone who is, please take a moment to check out our story and website.

We’d love to get to know you and tell your love story. <3
