Portraits of Sarah | A Bit of Advice | Michael and Carina Photography

Sarah’s is pretty cool. And silly. No, she said so her self on her slick looking blog, Coffee Rings and Southern Things.

But that’s great for us – ’cause we love to be silly.

Another thing you can tell from reading her blog – is just how sweet and humble she is.

She touched our hearts when she told us she was nervous about meeting us…

What she doesn’t realize… is that we’re still nervous too, when we meet other photographers, when we meet new clients..

That whole feeling of butterflies in the stomach?

We get that too.

We were honestly nervous to meet her… just to give her “a bit of advice…” i.e. a mini-mentoring/portrait session.. we’re still learning ourselves. Most photographers in Virginia probably consider us “green behind the ears” (that’s a German expression) as we haven’t been around too long.

But we were excited. Excited to share what we knew, excited to show her a few techniques, excited to make a new friend.

She’s been into photography since she got her hands on her dad’s trusty old AE-1 in high school. By the way, look at the condition of that camera! They don’t make them like those anymore…

Her favorite gear includes her 100mm 2.8 L lens and a Canon 7D.

We asked her what her goal was. Some people say, “To make my living off of doing just photography.”

While I’m sure she wouldn’t have anything against that, her answer just she’d like to be more “knowledgeable” and grow more “creatively.”

What a humble, wise thing to say…

Sarah, thanks so much for spending the afternoon with us and we know we’re looking forward to getting to see you again and watching you grow!

Tide’s Inn Engagement Photography | Elaine & Ryan | Michael and Carina Photography

We can identify a lot with Elaine and Ryan. They’re deeply in love, but have been forced to live thousands of miles apart for too long.

But that all changes this July when they get married!

Elaine lives in Maryland, and Ryan in Nevada.

They’re crazy in love, but jobs keep them apart.

They are more than ready to get married- if they could tomorrow, I think they would!

We photographed the engagement session in the golden light of the late evening at the Tide’s Inn in the sleepy little town of Irvington, in Mike’s home territory, on the Northern Neck of Virginia.

Thanks to Carol and the supportive Tide’s Inn staff, as well as our trusty sidekick Seth! Elaine and Ryan, thank you for making us a part of your big day! Filmscans coming soon…

Photography Gear Love | Michael and Carina Photography

Inventory | Michael and Carina Photography

So our first wedding of 2013 is just over a month away!

We are SO excited!

But we are also super excited to say we’ve been in business in the United States for 8 MONTHS!!

That’s right – full-time, bona-fide American photographers living and working in the good ole US of A since August/September 2012!

We received a couple of inquiries a while back as to just what our wedding gear looked like.

Well, it’s… unique

We don’t have a steady 70-200mm 2.8 as a lot of wedding photographers do. It’s a great lens, albeit heavy, and we rent it sometimes… but there’s a story as to why we don’t have one..

Maybe we’ll write it here sometime soon, in case you don’t already know it. It’s quite a story!

We do however have some our own assortment of gear that fits our style and how we like to shoot.

Now, as we’ve said before, gear really doesn’t make a photographer.

All photographers know the innocent but misplaced remark, “Wow, you must have a really nice camera to take such good pictures!”

(which is kind of akin to telling a chef the soup tastes so good because he/she has such an awesome pot… though no one means it badly;))

We’ve met some fantastic photographers who shoot with third party lenses, third party flashes, or 5 year old cameras, or even older, beat up cameras from the 80s and 70s.

Without a person to operate it, a camera is absolutely worthless. It’s just a tool, waiting to be used…

A $5,000 camera with a $2,000 lens is not creative.

I won’t say it never will be creative, because one of our favorite movies is AI: Arificial Intelligence… but for the time being, a camera without a photographer is pretty much a piece of junk!

That’s where we come in…

It’s not about the gear, but what you do with the gear.

But that said, here’s a sample of some of our equipment…

Some of it stayed in the closet (stands, umbrellas, a lot of batteries and CF cards)

But this is part of what comes with us to weddings and sessions and what helps enable us to create something beautiful.

Inventory | Michael and Carina Photography

I think that’s it but I probably forgot something…

Inventory | Michael and Carina Photography

Now it may seem like a lot…

It is…

And trust us, we know other very respectable photographers who are successful with A LOT more…

And we know other photographers whose inventory list is a lot shorter, but whose client lists are extremely long…

To each his/her own..

Inventory | Michael and Carina Photography

But just as the creativity of the photographer cannot be understated…

The right gear for your style, and even more so, knowing that gear inside and out, whether Canon, Nikon, Sigma, or Contax or Mamiya, is VERY important if you want to be a professional.

And we want to be professionals. Well, we are professionals. But we want to keep being professionals!:)

It’s so important to know your gear left and right, inside and out…

To know how it operates with this lens vs. that lens, or what kind of images you can make with it in this kind of light vs. that kind of light…

And here’s an important note: if you want to be a photographer, while it’s very important that you do learn your gear, we believe it’s better to do it on your time, not on your client’s dime.

Before you accept money for your services, you really need to know what you’re doing. Everyone has to start somewhere, but it’s unfair to charge someone for your learning experience.

Just don’t stop making photos. Don’t just take photos, MAKE them.

I like that in German, there’s no such phrase as “to take a photo.” There is only, “ein Foto zu machen” – you have to MAKE  a photo.

Pour your creativity into what you do, into how you see light, into how you compose… That’s what photography is all about, not about how long your zoom is or how many red rings you own.

We were recently out with a friend, a photographer who is really passionate about what he does. He knows light. He knows his gear.

He had a 5D Mk II and a 50mm 1.8 – a hundred dollar lens. But to watch him work, to see how passionately he went about making images… it wasn’t a surprise when his images came back and just knocked us off our feet.

Just keep shooting, and watch yourself grow, and then watch other people come to you and ask you if they can invest in what it is you do… and then keep shooting some more…:)

Inventory | Michael and Carina Photography

Our friends and family laugh that we always have a camera with us and we’re always taking pictures..

But that’s what we feel we almost have to do.

We call ourselves professionals. People, couples, invest in us to play very important roles in preserving precious memories.. they invest in our art..

We are constantly seeking to reward that trust by constantly improving, and knowing what kind of image we will get in what kind of light without looking at the back of the camera..

Okay, we’re still working on that last one, but we’re getting the hang of it:)

And yes, when you’re trying to take amazing images, the cost of the tools does rack up.. but it’s minimal compared to the value of the service we provide, and the investment our clients place in that service.

We are so thankful, to God, to our friends, to other vendors who believe in us, and to clients who invest in our services, for the opportunity to use these tools for good.

PS. If you made it down this far, and you could really care less about photography gear, you just love pretty photos, then this photo is for you. August shares your boredom:

Williamsburg and Hampton Roads Photographers | Taylor | Michael and Carina Photography

Met up with Justin Ferry for a practice portrait photography shoot out in downtown Yorktown, Virginia, with an absolutely gorgeous model, Taylor Sites.

Taylor has also modeled for several other prominent photographers and is featured in a print ad & has posed in workshops.

She is ALSO a bridesmaid at one of our upcoming weddings!!!:)

No wonder- she’s an absolute natural in front of the lens! She came at such short notice, arrived right on time, and posed without even noticing the chilly wind coming up off of the York River.

Had a great time hanging out with friends in the cold and looking forward to doing it again… maybe when it’s warmer though!

Hampton Roads Engagement Photographers | Jennie + Tim | Michael and Carina Photography

Carina and I were driving through the “backwoods” of Gloucester County when Jennie’s mom called us up.

We could barely make out that she was inquiring as to our services for her daughter’s July wedding, but the reception was so bad we could barely understand anything else.

Just as I told her “I’m sorry, but we’re probably going to lose you and may have to call you ba—–” – the line went dead.

Inside, I let out a little “nooooooooooo!” cry.

We hurried “back to civilization” and called her back – hoping she was still interested after being hung up on – and she was!:)

Luckily, she understood the situation completely and asked if we could arrange a meeting.

“Sure, we’d love to!” I said. “But won’t Jennie or Tim come along? We like to meet our brides and grooms before the big day.”

“I understand, but that might be difficult because they’re both pilots in the Air Force stationed in different parts of the country.”

I don’t know about her, but growing up with an uncle who worked at Langley AFB who used to take me there as a child, that’s when she pretty much had me booked.

Jennie and Tim are a couple with an awesome sense of humor.

They’re just natural together.

They’re easygoing, chill, and totally in love with each other.

And they’re a pretty impressive couple, too.

Tim is a F-15 Strike Eagle pilot stationed out west. Top speed he’s flown – somewhere around Mach 1.5. Yeah. Not bad, right?

Jennie’s plane might not go so fast… but it is “invisible.” She’s one of a select few B-2 Spirit Bomber pilots.

They’re a match made in “the wild blue yonder,” no doubt…

Jennie & Tim, we had an awesome time with you at your engagement session. It was an honor to work with you and you are absolutely beautiful together.

We are SO excited about your Williamsburg Alumni House wedding this July!!

Williamsburg Bridal Portraits | Williamsburg Wedding Photographers | Contax 645 | Michael and Carina Photography

A few months ago we went on our first photoshoot, with an actual client, with film. Just experimenting, we didn’t use too many rolls and photographed most of Yea-Wen’s bridal portraits with our 5Ds.

We were still trying to find a good place to develop these test shots. Let’s just say, our first choice was not the best one. Luckily we got the negatives back and sent them off again to Indie Film Lab.

For our first time on a shoot with film, we’re pleased! Especially since most of our metering was done in our heads:)

You can see the rest here.

Yea-Wen was a gorgeous bride who asked us to meet her in Williamsburg to take the portraits she did not have time for at her wedding. With hair by Hair by Alice and makeup by Theresa Little Makeup Artistry, we took her portraits in the gardens around Williamsburg and the William & Mary Campus. Her gorgeous bouquet was her own DIY creation!:)

Portrait of a Georgia Minister / Kodak Portra 160

We were driving back from Florida when we turned off of I-95 into the little town of Horse Stamp, Georgia. We met this pastor there. He asked if he could bless our car before we continued on our way. I said sure, if I can make your portrait.:)-M

The fine art approach isn’t a model that needs to be mimicked. It’s a framework, a mind-set. – Jose Villa

Film Blog

A lot of people seem to be talking about “film” in the photography world at the moment, and it seems almost as if serious photographers have collectively, almost subconsciously, started to drift back towards a medium once passed off as being as outdated as vinyl records.

After a few months “fiddling” with it… we begin to understand why…

Now, first things first..
We are not “film photographers…”
We are not “digital photographers…”
We are photographers…

We photograph people. We photograph weddings.

Cameras are our tools, the means to an end. They are (expensive) pieces of equipment put in our hands, and left alone they are completely void of creativity.

As a tool, digital cameras offer almost limitless possibilities to photographers. With our DSLRs and “fast” lenses, we can photograph scenes in next to no light even without the aid of off camera flash (though it helps!). With a few 16GB cards, we shoot several thousand photos easily before popping one card out and putting another in.

But that said…

There is just something about film… maybe about the experience of film… that we just fell in love with.

Hours spent searching for inspiration in 2012 eventually led us to purchasing Elizabeth Messina’s “The Luminous Portrait.”

Her book is now what we call our photography Bible.

It approaches photography from not so much a technical point of view, but a person’s point of view.

She spends multiple chapters, beautifully adorned by her work, reinforcing how it’s less about the camera, the technical stuff, the settings, the complications, and more about 2 things – connecting with your subject and connecting with the good light.

It’s a fantastic read whether you’re into digital photography or film… but there was one aspect of her personal workflow that appealed to us. By shooting only film, and properly exposing the film, she has more time to connect with subjects whether than constantly changing settings, or worrying about how to edit something out later.

We simply had to give it a try.

Shooting our first rolls of film was exciting and expensive.

No, film is neither fast nor cheap.
But we love working with it. The patience it demands, the understanding, the pause you have to take before you release the shutter.

Just looking through the viewfinder of our Contax, you can create a picture so beautiful it makes gives you butterflies in your stomach. The viewfinder is massive and you can see the depth of field change in real time. With fingers on the focus ring of the gorgeous 80mm Zeiss glass, we watch subjects melt in and out of focus.

With our first wedding of the “season” coming up next month (May 2013), we can hardly wait to incorporate this newfound love into our workflow.

If you’re interested in trying out film, consider these completely from-our-experience, non-scientific tips. Again, based only on our first impressions.

Exposure: You seem to be able to capture a wider spectrum of color when shooting film. The chance of getting blown out highlights and shadows without any detail is lower than when shooting digital, and if you know anything about your exposure, it’s actually almost impossible. This is especially helpful, as when you put a roll of film in, you have to commit to the film speed of that roll.

Metering: Don’t rely on the metering system in your camera. Use a lightmeter, or even a light reading app, and expose for the darkest area of your subject. Don’t worry about highlights in the sky as you would with digital. You can push the film a bit further than digital cameras – there is more room for over- and under-exposure. This is probably the most important difference between the two. After a while, you memorize what exposures work best in which light situations.

Time: Yes, film makes you wait for the results. The tension grows and the patience (also of the subject) is tested. But film has a major time advantage for photographers: next to no time spent on editing. If you know your techniques and settings your pictures will return to you the way you would try to make them look after hours spent photoshopping or in lightroom. We always feel like it is Christmas morning when we find our lab’s “Scans are ready” message in our inbox. By the way, if you shoot film you should check out Indie Film Lab – they are amazing.

Feel: There’s something rustic and artistic about shooting film. You feel like you’re part of something important, like you’re creating history. There’s a nostalgic quality to it that helps create a greater emotional investment in what you are creating. Okay, maybe that’s a bit exaggerated but that’s just us.
-
Money: Shooting film will cost you. From purchase to scan we pay about $22 per roll. One roll has about 16 pictures (on 120mm film). Unlike with digital, ever time we release the shutter, we are spending money. Imagine shooting weddings at this rate. If you shoot film you professionally will need to consider adjusting your pricing to make sure you’re not making loss. And since there are no “re-runs” and no “chimping” with film it really makes you think twice about the image you’re about to take. Is it perfect? Is it worth it? Is the focus right? Are my settings spot on?

We are so excited to be blessed with the opportunity to create unforgettable images with so many amazing couples using a combination of new & old techniques. We are looking forward to capturing memories and fleeting moments on professional DSLRs throughout the wedding day until deep into the night, but we are also very eager to bring this “film” approach to our wedding photography and wedding portrait process.

Hope you enjoyed this little update into our “film journey…” Maybe we can inspire someone else to try it out themselves…

Behind the Scenes | Hair by Alice | Theresa Little | Hair by Alice } Michael and Carina Photography

A few days ago we got to hang out with Alice Olson of Hair by Alice – you can read more about that here – and we got to meet the wonderful Theresa Little of Theresa Little Makeup Artistry.

Theresa Little is a prominent Virginia Beach makeup artist whose work has been featured in multiple publications and television commercials.

Just for fun, and for Alice to work her creative magic, Theresa did the makeup for herself and Alice did this bold, original styling in what seemed like no time at all.

It’s not often one of our makeup artist friends turns model and steps in front of the camera herself, but Theresa did! She was sporting not only Alice’s awesome styling but her own makeup, with shadows to accentuate her cheeks, deep magenta to boldly accentuate her lips and to match the tones in her hair, and green around her eyes to compliment the streaks of green in the feathers in her hair. And yea, she did all that in probably less than half an hour.

This is what it’s like when a team of creatives gets together to have fun!
